Website Workflow (part 5) Aug 30, 2010by Mr. Artsy

In this series you learn how to create a simple website from scratch. Follow along with the source files (available at www.helloartsy.com) as I build the website; creating graphics in Illustrator and Fireworks and coding HTML and CSS in Dreamweaver.

Spend some time researching and experimenting with image optimization. Large image sizes can be the number one culprit in a slowly loading website.

Here's some guidelines for choosing file types:

  1. Use PNG ... if image is mostly solid areas of color such as in many vector graphics and logos
  2. Use JPEG ...if the image is a photograph or an image containing complex gradations

  3. Use PNG ... if you need transparency
  4. Use JPEG ...if the image is to be displayed quite large on screen

Above all simply get familiar with the optimize tool bar in fireworks and do the comparisons yourself!
