Red Hourglass = Danger!

The black widow spider is the most poisonous spider in North America but only the adult female. This is because the male and juvenile black widows are mostly harmless and rarely bite humans.

Black widows have a round body with a shiny, jet-black color and hourglass-shaped red markings on its abdomen.

Female black widows produce a neurotoxic venom to immobilize prey that they then devour. They also use their venom to defend themselves against other predators.

In rare cases their venom can be fatal to humans; however, this is quite rare.

Black widows are typically found near streams, lakes, wood piles, rocks or any other dark spot which gives them plenty of hiding places to stay out of sight. They tend to build their webs in hidden cracks or under objects like trash cans or wood piles because they like to stay hidden too.
