Thinking with Type: A Critical Guide for Designers, Writers, Editors, & Students
by Ellen Lupton

thinking-with-type

A superb job regarding type in general. No, it’s not a guide to using typefaces in your everyday graphic design career. It is, however a wonderful account on the beauty of letters and how they can create on their own or compliment other design elements. The author is extremely knowledgeable and gives insightful historical accounts to typography’s development. Why do we refer to letters as being “uppercase” or “lowercase”? Read this book and you’ll find out. If you get a kick out of using different fonts on the computer or have and appreciation for lettering, this book belongs on your bookshelf.
