Draw an Excavator
In this lesson, you will learn how you can draw an excavator, a type of heavy equipment used for digging and construction. This drawing session will take about thirty minutes, giving you enough time for each step. You will focus on basic shapes and details that make up this important piece of construction equipment.
Drawing is all about practice, so don’t worry if things don’t turn out perfectly at first. Remember that it’s just paper, and you can always try again. With each attempt, you’ll notice improvements as you develop new skills. Keep at it, and soon you’ll feel more confident with every drawing you create.

This is all about you and what you want! Your drawing can be as unique as you are, so choose colors that make you smile. You’ll have a total of nine steps, so get set for some fun as you create an awesome looking excavator on paper!
Time Needed: 45 minutes
-
Outline the Base

First, draw a thin rectangle to outline the base of the excavator’s cab. Then, add two short vertical lines beneath the base.
-
Attach the Hydraulic Pump

Attach the rectangular-like hydraulic pump. Then, add thin air vents.
-
Form the Cab

Form the outline of the excavator’s cab and add two windows.
-
Draw the Arm

Outline the curving shape of the boom. Now, attach the arm extending from the boom.
-
Attach the Bucket

Draw the excavator’s bucket attached to the end of the arm.
-
Add the Idlers

Add two circular idlers connected by two horizontal lines as shown.
-
Outline the Rollers

Outline the small circular rollers.
-
Draw the Tracks

Draw the tracks around the rollers and idlers similar to the illustration.
-
Add Color to the Excavator Drawing

First, fill in the windows with a light shade of blue. Next, color the cab, air vents, tracks, bucket as well as the bottom part of the cab’s base with black. Now, use shades of yellow for the hydraulic pump, excavating arm, base, idlers and rollers. Then, fill in the hollow space in the tracks with light gray.
