How to Draw a Birthday Cake
Young artists will have a wonderful time learning how to draw a delicious birthday cake in 9 easy illustrative steps.
Each step is simple enough for any child or beginner artist to follow along with. Not only will you be learning how to draw better but you’ll experience drawing a tasty dessert that is colorful and fun to draw! I’ll be drawing 5 birthday candles on this cake but you can easy change the drawing to have as many candles as you wish.
Also included in this drawing is cake frosting, a cake stand and some other nice details you’d expect on a fancy birthday cake.
This lesson only takes about 20 minutes and includes a pdf you can easily print or download. The pdf packet even contains a coloring-book-like page with just the line art. (if you only want the color book page)

In today’s tutorial, we will discover how to draw a birthday cake on paper. The location and proportion of each part will be observed in each step of the how-to article here. Note that the blue lines are used to show the new parts being drawn in each step.
Time Needed: 20 minutes

Outline The Cake
Outline the cake by drawing a rectangle curving upwards.

Draw The Frosting
Draw the frosting by making a bumpy horizontal line.

Attach The Candles
Attach the candles by creating vertical rectangles on top of the frosting. Erase parts of the candles that overlap with the frosting.

Draw The Frosting At The Back
Draw the visible part of the frosting at the back by drawing wavy lines.

Add The Flame
Add the candle flames by drawing curved lines that wave a bit and come to a point up top.

Draw The Cake Stand
Draw the plate part of the cake stand by creating an oval with curved lines. Erase parts of the plate that overlap with the bottom of the cake.

Add The Cake Stand’s Base
Add the cake stand’s base by first drawing an oval then connecting it to the plate with the line like in the illustration.

Decorate The Cake
Decorate the cake by drawing small rounded shapes.

Complete The Birthday Cake Drawing
Complete the birthday cake drawing by first coloring the cake with a light orange crayon. Next, shade the frosting with an orange crayon. Now, use pink and blue crayons to color the candles then an orange crayon to shade the flame. Then, color the cake stand with a blue crayon. Finally, use vibrant colors to shade the decorations on the cake.
