Have fun with this simple step by step lesson for learning how to draw your own version of Grant Wood’s famous painting “American Gothic”. This easy art-history-drawing lesson is perfect for young children looking to get started with drawing which also combines a piece of American painting history.
All drawing steps are included here which make it fun and easy to follow! Expect this drawing to require about 30-45 minutes, but the art-making process may actually take longer depending on how detailed your artwork is.

We will arrive at a finished drawing of American Gothic by working on one area at a time. This project will take 9 steps to complete as we continue to create each part moving closer to the final work of art. The finished artwork will be topped off with color creating a work of art you will want to share with friends!
Time Needed: 30 minutes
First Draw The Pitchfork
First, draw the vertical rod to form the pitchfork’s shaft then attach its thin pointed tines.
Next Outline The Heads
Next, draw the oval shaped heads of the daughter and father. Now, attach the small curved outline of their ears.
Form The Hair
Form the shape of the daughter and father’s hair similar to the illustration. Make sure to erase parts of the head that overlap with the hair!
Now Add The Faces
First, form the eyes by drawing a circle with a curved line. Next, add the brows by drawing a line curving downwards. Now, draw short lines for the nose and mouth. For the father on the right side of the drawing, form the outline of his rounded glasses.
Outline The Shape Of The Bodies
Start by forming the outline of the father’s body. Draw his right arm holding the pitchfork similar to the illustration. Then, outline the shape of the daughter’s body.
Draw The Clothes
For the father on the right, draw two vertical lines to form his coat. Add two diagonal lines to draw the collar of his coat. Next, draw curved horizontal lines in between the coat to draw his overalls. For the daughter on the left, draw the collar of her dress and add an oval shaped brooch. Then, outline the shape of her dress as shown.
Form The Roofs And Walls Of The House
First, draw a trapezoid to form the bottom roof. Next, add a V-shaped outline to form the top roof. Now, draw vertical lines to form the texture of the walls.
Draw The Window
Draw the arch-shaped outline of the window. Then, form the grilles by drawing a Y-shaped line with a horizontal line attached.
Complete The American Gothic Drawing
Let’s add a pop of color to our American Gothic drawing! First, color the skin with a peach crayon. Next, fill in the eyes with a black crayon. Now, color the daughter’s hair with a yellow crayon and the father’s hair with a gray crayon. Shade the daughter’s dress with dark blue and maroon. Use a white crayon to color her collar and a yellow crayon for the brooch. For the father’s coat, use a dark blue crayon. Then, shade his shirt with a white crayon and his overalls with a light blue crayon. Use a brown crayon to color the shaft of the pitchfork and a gray crayon to fill in the tines. Now, use a light yellow crayon to color the walls of the house and a light brown crayon for the roofs. Finally, shade the sky and window with a light blue crayon.
