The Whales of the Ocean and How to Protect Them
Whales are amazing creatures that people have been fascinated with for centuries. They live in the ocean and travel from one region to another, which means it’s possible for a whale to swim past your boat if you happen to be afloat in their habitat.
Monitor Your Own Impact on Whales
If you see a whale while traveling by boat, it is important to stay far enough away from them. It is also important not to make any sudden movements or loud noises that could startle the whales. You wouldn’t want to scare them away.
Whales are an important part of the ocean ecosystem and are an integral part of many cultures. Many people have a role in protecting whales by stopping marine pollution, whaling, and other factors that threaten their existence.
Types of Whales
The two main types of whales are the baleen whales and toothed whales. The baleen whales have no teeth and instead filter their food from the water using their baleen. The toothed whales on the other hand have teeth to catch fish, squid, and other prey that they find in the water.
- Baleen Whale – Filter food, blue whales are an example that have baleen.
- Toothed Whale – Teeth for catching prey, Orcas are an example that have teeth.
