Materials
- Pencil
- Circle Stencil (something circular to trace)
- Drawing Paper
- Crayons or Colored Pencils
- Black Marker (optional)

In today’s basic drawing lesson, we will discover to draw moon phases on paper. It will be helpful to trace something circular. Also note the number of circles/moons and how they are organized in step one.
Time Needed: 30 minutes

Outline The Moons

Start by drawing eight circles to outline the moons.

Draw The Waxing Crescent

Let’s draw the waxing crescent phase of the moon by creating a curved line where it is starting to appear. Add small ovals to form the craters.

Next Form The First Quarter Phase

Next, form the first quarter phase where half of the moon is visible. Draw a vertical line then add the oval-shaped craters.

Now Add The Waxing Gibbous

Now, draw a curved line to form the waxing gibbous phase where more than half of the moon is visible. Don’t forget to add small ovals to draw the craters.

Draw The Full Moon

The whole moon is visible in its full moon phase. Form the oval-shaped outline of its craters.

Form The Waning Gibbous

In the waning gibbous phase, the part of the moon starts to hide. Let’s draw a curved line then fill the left side of the moon with oval craters.

Add The Third Quarter Phase

Draw a straight line and add oval craters on the left side of the moon.

Then Draw The Waning Crescent

In the waning crescent phase, only a small portion of the moon is visible. Form a curved line then draw the tiny craters on the left side of the moon.

Complete The Moon Phases Drawing

Let’s complete our drawing of the moon phases by adding some color! First, use a black crayon to fill in the hidden part of the moons. Use a light gray crayon to shade the surface of the moons. Then, color the craters with a dark gray crayon.
