In today’s tutorial, we are going to discover how to draw a hippopotamus on paper. The location and proportion of each part will be highlighted in each step of the tutorial. Observe that the blue lines are used to show the new shapes being created in each step.
Time Needed: 20 minutes

Form The Nose And Mouth
Form the nose by first outlining an oval shape with two ovals. Add to rectangular shapes at the bottom of the nose to form the teeth. Finally, draw a line curving upwards to create the jaw of the hippopotamus.

Outline The Head
Create two shaded ovals for the eyes. Next, draw a line curving downwards to form the top part of the hippopotamus’ head.

Add The Ears
Create two curved lines on both sides of the hippopotamus’ head.

Draw The Body And Tail
First, draw an oval shape connected to the hippopotamus’ head. Then, form a thin shape connected to the body to create the tail.

Attach The Legs
Attach legs at the bottom of the hippopotamus’ body as shown in the illustration. Don’t forget to draw lines curving towards the ends of its feet to create the toes.

Complete The Hippopotamus Drawing
Let’s finish the hippopotamus drawing by adding some color! First, use a light shade of purple for the snout. Use a white crayon to shade the teeth. Then, use a gray crayon to color the inner ears and toes of the hippopotamus. Next, color the nose of the hippopotamus using a dark purple crayon. Finally, shade the rest of the hippopotamus with a purple crayon.
