In this step by step lesson, we will discover how to draw a kayak with basic drawing tools. Be sure to observe the different sizes and shapes of each part of the kayak. The lines in each step is outlined in blue so you can identify the current parts that you will be illustrating.
Time Needed: 30 minutes
Outline The Deck
Outline the deck with an elongated oval shape with pointed ends.
Form The Hull
To form the hull, we will draw a curved line from one point of the elongated oval going to the other end.
Add The Hatch
Draw a ring shape to form the hatch.
Draw The Cockpit
Add a ring shape to the top of the boat to draw the cockpit. This is where the paddler will sit.
Attach The Seat
To attach the seat, draw a rectangular box with rounded corners in the cockpit.
Start Forming The Bungee
Start forming the bungee cords that hold the kayak gear in place by drawing a zigzag line.
Continue Forming The Bungee
Continue forming the bungee on the kayak’s deck by drawing another zigzag line.
Add The Kayak’s Paddle
Next, let’s add the kayak’s paddle! First, draw the shaft of the paddle by making two long, straight lines. Then, attach the blades by drawing a rounded shape on both sides of the paddle’s shaft.
Complete The Kayak Drawing
Complete the kayak drawing by first coloring the kayak’s deck and hull with blue. Next, color the hatch with black and gray. Now, shade the seat with yellow and orange crayons. Then, color the walls inside the cockpit with purple. Let’s shade the paddle’s blades with a yellow crayon and the shaft with an orange crayon.
