How to Draw a Tall Ship

In this lesson, we will start with a blank piece of paper and learn how to draw a tall ship in 9 instructive steps. We will proportion out the proportions of each part of the tall ship.
Time Needed: 30 minutes

Draw The Top Of The Hull
Let’s first draw the top of the tall ship’s hull by forming the long horizontal shape as shown. Make sure to add the slope to form the back of the ship called the stern.

Form The Sides Of The Hull
Form the sides of the hull by creating two diagonal lines.

Draw The Waves
Draw the waves in the water using horizontal wavy lines. Don’t forget to close the bottom of the tall ship by drawing a wavy line.

Add The Lining On The Hull
Add the lining across the hull by creating two horizontal lines that are slightly curving upward.

Draw Portholes
Next, let’s draw portholes on the top part of the hull by drawing ring shapes.

Attach The Masts
Attach the masts on the tall ship by creating three thin vertical poles. Make sure to draw the center mast as the tallest pole.

Attach The Boom
Now, in order to draw the booms, let’s create three short thin poles attached on each mast.

Form The Sails
Form the sails by making two rectangular shapes as shown. Next, make a curved line attached to the bottom boom on each mast to draw the rolled up sails.

Complete The Tall Ship Drawing
Let’s complete the drawing of a tall ship by adding colors! First, use an orange crayon to color each mast, boom, as well as the outer part of the portholes. Next, shade the sails with a light yellow crayon. Don’t forget to color the inner part of the portholes with a blue crayon. Now, fill in the top of the hull with a dark brown crayon and the bottom part of the hull with a lighter brown crayon. Finally, use different shades of blue to color the sky and water.
