Materials
- Pencil
- Drawing Paper
- Crayons or Colored Pencils
- Black Marker (optional)

In this beginner’s lesson, we are going to learn how to draw an onion with your drawing materials. Be sure to observe the various sizes and shapes of each part of the onion. The lines in each step is outlined in blue so you can easily see the most recent elements that you will be creating.
Time Needed: 20 minutes

Draw The Onion Bulb Outline
Draw a circular shape on the left side of your paper for the initial shape of the onion bulb.

Draw An Onion Half
Then, draw an oval overlapping the circle and the right side of the paper. This will be an onion that has been cut in half.

Add The Onion Scales
Add curved lines inside the cut onion half. These layers are called the “scales” of the onion.

Draw The Stem
Draw the base of the stem at the top of the onion.

Add Another Stem
Add a well drawn stem to the remaining onion as well. You can hint at where the roots were near the bottom of the bulb as well.

Complete Your Drawing
Grab your coloring materials and begin to color your onion drawing! The insides of onions tend to be whitish in color but the outer skins can be white, red, brown or even close to orange in color!
