How to Draw Hen and Chick

By the end of this lesson we will complete a drawing of a hen and chick by drawing one section at a time. The drawing will take 9 steps to complete as we continue to create each section moving closer to the finished drawing. The completed artwork will be finished off with color creating a work of art you will want to share with friends!

Time Needed: 30 minutes

1. Draw The Head

   

   Draw the shape of the hen’s head as shown.

2. Add The Face

   

   First, create the wavy comb on top of the hen’s head. Next, draw a shaded oval to add its eye. Then, draw the pointed shape of the hen’s beak.

3. Attach The Wattle

   

   Draw two U-shaped lines attached to the bottom of the hen’s beak to form its wattle.

4. Outline The Body

   

   Outline the shape of the hen’s body connected to its head.

5. Attach The Wing And Tail

   

   Form the fluffy shape of the hen’s wing and tail similar to the illustration.

6. Add A Chick

   

   Let’s add an outline of a baby chick next to the hen.

7. Form The Chick’s Body

   

   First, draw a small shaded circle to draw the chick’s eye. Next, form the pointed shape of the beak. Then, draw a line forming the shape of its wing.

8. Add The Chick’s Legs

   

   Form the tiny legs of the baby chick attached to the bottom of its body.

9. Complete The Hen And Chick Drawing

   

   Let’s now color our lovely drawing of a hen and chick! First, use a red crayon to color the hen’s comb and wattle. Next, shade the feathers on the hen’s head with a cream colored crayon. Use a light brown crayon to fill in its wing and tail. Now, shade the feathers on the hen’s body with a dark brown crayon. For the beaks and the chick’s tiny legs, use an orange crayon. Finally, color the baby chick’s body with a yellow crayon.
