In today’s lesson, we will learn how to draw kelp on paper. The shape and proportion of each part will be highlighted in each step of the how-to article here. Take notice that the blue pencil lines are used to show the current elements being drawn in each step.
Time Needed: 30 minutes

Draw The Stipe
Draw the kelp’s stipe by creating a long thin wavy shape.

Attach The Gas Bladder
Attach the kelp’s gas bladder by drawing elongated curved lines connected to the stipe.

Outline The Central Rib
Outline the central rib of the kelp’s blades by making wavy lines attached to the gas bladder.

Form The Blades
Using the central rib as our reference, draw wavy lines as shown to form the shape of the blade.

Add More Kelp
Let’s add more kelp to our drawing! First, draw long thin wavy shapes like in the first step.

Draw The Central Rib
Now, let’s draw the central rib of each blade by making wavy lines attached to the stipe.

Next Form The Blades
Next, form the kelp’s blades by drawing wavy lines touching the ends of the central rib.

Draw The Seafloor
Draw the seafloor by creating a horizontal line. Don’t forget to draw a very short horizontal line at the bottom of the middle kelp’s stipe.

Complete The Kelp Drawing
Finally, let’s add some color to our kelp drawing! Grab a light green crayon and shade the stipe and blades of the kelp in the middle. Next, using a yellow green crayon, fill in the kelp’s gas bladder. Now, use a darker shade of green to color the kelp on both sides and add some depth to the drawing. Then, let’s color the seafloor with a light brown crayon and the body of water with different shades of blue.
